Icehouse Man of Colours Album 16: The Story Behind the Synthpop Classic

The album peaked at No. 1 on the Australian album charts for 11 weeks from 5 October 1987[7] and has sold over 700,000 copies.[5] "Electric Blue" was their only Australian No. 1 single,[7] the release of the album and its five singles marked the zenith of Icehouse's commercial success, both locally and internationally. Several other songs from the album also charted well.

It was the first Australian album to supply five top 30 hit singles "Crazy" (No. 4 in July), "Electric Blue" (co-written by Davies and John Oates of US band Hall & Oates)[8] (No. 1, October), "My Obsession" (No. 12, December), "Man of Colours" (No. 28, February 1988) and "Nothing Too Serious" (No. 29, May 1988).[7] With US chart success for "Crazy", which reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 on its Mainstream Rock chart, and "Electric Blue" (No. 7 Hot 100, No. 10 Mainstream), the album Man of Colours reached No. #43 on the Billboard 200.[9][10]

The album won the ARIA Award for Album of the Year and ARIA Award for Highest Selling Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 1988;[11] the associated song "Electric Blue" won 'Most Performed Australasian Popular Work' at the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) Music Awards for its writers Davies and Oates.[12]

Different versions of the album have been released, the initial Australian release by Regular Records (see infobox above right) was as a ten track vinyl LP or as a music cassette or as a twelve track CD with two additional mixes of "Crazy". The US / UK release by Chrysalis Records had a different track order from the Australian LP, and the track lengths for the two big singles ("Crazy" and "Electric Blue") are longer on this version of the album. The 1997 Japanese CD version released by For Life Records had two different tracks added. In 2002, Warner Music Australia re-released Man of Colours, with Davies and Ryan Scott digitally remastering, including five bonus tracks.[6] In Australia, the album was also offered on three limited edition coloured vinyl pressings, which were the colours of the flowers that the human figure on the cover was holding.

Legendary Aussie outfit Icehouse may be getting a bit long in the tooth, but they still have lust for life left in them to spare, as the veteran band has proved with their announcement of an impending 2015-16 national tour, as well as their first-ever live album release.

And what wise choices those two are for expansion: both albums are the most successful of Icehouse's work in their native land, reaching No. 3 and No. 1, respectively, on the Australian charts. Two of the band's biggest hits come from each album as well; there's 1982's "Great Southern Land," a beloved tribute to the band's native country, and 1987's "Electric Blue," co-written with John Oates and not only a chart-topping single in Australia but a Top 10 hit in America, the band's biggest song on those shores.

I'm happy to see these albums being reissued, but I sort of wish the Primitive Man and Man of Colours sets had an additional CD of live tracks or remixes like the Flowers reissue did. The Primitive Man DVD doesn't even have a live take of "Great Southern Land" on it!

Paul started playing drums at age 16 in various Sydney cover bands. At age 19, he was discovered by Iva Davies and asked to join the band, Icehouse. This began his professional career and an association with Icehouse spanning two decades and which still continues today. Recording with Icehouse resulted in the albums 'Measure for Measure' and 'Man of Colours' produced by David Lord. Man of Colours was one of the highest selling Australian albums of all time which included two top-ten hits in the USA Billboard Charts for record company Chrysalis Records.

The following albums 'Code Blue' produced by Nick Launay, and 'Big Wheel' produced by David Lord, added another three top-twenty hits to the collection. Icehouse toured extensively throughout Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand numerous times. Touring highlights include touring the US with The Cars, playing at Madison Square Gardens in New York City, the prestigious Montreaux Pop Festival in Switzerland, American TV shows "The Johnny Carson Show", "NBC Today" and Top of the Pops UK.

In 2003, he played on albums for the band Lo-Tel (Sony Music) produced by Rick Will, and solo artist Duncan James (BMG), produced by Andy Gill. He toured with both bands, including national tours along side John Maher and Blondie. Paul continues to play with Iva Davies and Icehouse who were inducted into the APRA and ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006. Icehouse are regularly invited to play at large events and concerts throughout the nation, such as the televised 2005 Australia Day Concert at Parliament House Canberra to a live audience of 30,000 in January.

In 2007 and 2008, Paul played drums for Iva Davies for numerous corporate events in Australia and New Zealand. Paul toured Australia with the Countdown Arena Spectacular playing with Choirboys and Alex Smith (Moving Pictures) in all capital cities. In 2006/07 he toured with Choirboys, Noiseworks and Ian Moss in all capital cities and regional areas. Paul also plays for country music artist Adam Brand, as well as many other country music artists including James Blundell and Dianna Corcoran. He has toured nationally with Adam several times and has performed on the Today Show and Mornings with Kerri-Anne. He has also played at festivals such as the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2007 & 2008. In 2007 and continuing today Paul has been touring with Sneaky Sound System performing in entertainment centres, theatres, and festivals around Australia and New Zealand. TV appearances with Sneaky Sound System include "The Panel Christmas Wrap", Rove Live and Sunrise. Paul has recently completed drum tracks for their forthcoming album.

S&S Presents\r\nSAMMY ADAMSThe Senioritis TourWith Special GuestCris Cab\r\nhttp:\/\/www.sammyadamsmusic.com\/\r\nBoston's Sammy Adams caused quite a stir in 2010 when his debut album topped the online hip-hop charts the week of its release. Samuel Adams Wisner was a senior at Trinity College in Hartford when he decided to inject some attitude into Asher Roth's hit "I Love College." With the results posted online under the name Sam Adams, his answer song, "I Hate College," made the rapper an Internet star in 2009. On the strength of his independently released album "Boston's Boy," and mixtapes like "Party Records" and "Into the Wild," Sammy built through touring colleges and clubs across the country, and signed with RCA Records in 2012. Since then, the singer, songwriter, and producer has been in the studio with such collaborators as Pharrell Williams, Ryan Tedder, Mike Posner, Bei Maejor, Supa Dups, Afrojack, Matty Trump, and Vinylz, and others, working on his debut album. "Pharrell gave me the best advice about making an album," Adams says. "He said, 'Just be in the moment with your songs because if you try to write a song to be a hit two months from now, the culture can change.' I'm really just trying to be true to myself and carve out my own lane. That's what all my favorite artists have done." It's with that joy and energy that Adams approaches his career as a pop artist. "I want to make music that's universal, that anyone can relate to," he says. "I've had my biggest success so far with pop songs and it has inspired me to write super-catchy hooks that people can jump up and down to. It feels authentic to where I am creatively at this point and I'm excited to continue to explore and play with this kind of music."\r\n ","currency":"USD"}; // (function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m)i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r])(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-41980729-2', name: "main"); $(function() ga(function() if(window['GoogleAnalyticsPageViewsSent']) return; var allTrackers = ga.getAll(); for(var i in allTrackers) try allTrackers[i].require('displayfeatures'); catch(err) try allTrackers[i].send('pageview'); catch(err) try if (allTrackers[i].get('name') == 'main') allTrackers[i].set('dimension1',"Concert"); allTrackers[i].set('dimension2',"4306950"); allTrackers[i].set('dimension3',"11059"); allTrackers[i].set('dimension4',"167"); catch(err) window['GoogleAnalyticsPageViewsSent'] = 1; ); ); var closeText = 'Close'; !function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s)if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod?n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments);if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0;t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window,document,'script','//connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js');fbq('init', '275425976201017');fbq('track', 'PageView');window.parent.postMessage( "type":"analytics-event","provider":"facebook","data":"action":"track","type":"PageView", "*");fbq('track', 'ViewContent', content_type: 'product', eventref: "", content_ids: ["4306950"]);window.parent.postMessage( "type":"analytics-event","provider":"facebook","data":"action":"track","type":"ViewContent","data":"content_type":"product","eventref":"","content_ids":["4306950"], "*");ga('create', 'UA-132215467-1', 'name': 'client', 'allowLinker': true);var ga_dectorator = function(e) var me = this; var protocol = new RegExp('^https?://','i'); if (me && me.href && protocol.test(me.href)) // Ensure this is a link ga(function() // Only if ga is loaded. window.linker = window.linker ); ;$ && $(function() $('.listing_desc a').mousedown(ga_dectorator).keydown(ga_dectorator);); window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer []; function gtag()dataLayer.push(arguments); gtag('js', new Date()); gtag('config', 'AW-978733074'); var TSLUG_DISMISS = "Dismiss"; var isEmbed = window.parent.length != 0; var screenWidth = Math.max(document.documentElement.clientWidth, window.innerWidth 0) - 100; var runOptions = maxWidth: screenWidth, maxHeight: '100%', fitViewport: true, closeText: closeText + ': x' ; var runModal = new $.Modal('mymodal', runOptions); var myModal = // For hidden objects that require cloning inlineClone : function (obj, callback) options = afterOpen: function() callback && callback(); runModal.open(obj.clone().show(), options); return false; , inline: function (obj, callback) options = afterOpen: function() callback && callback(); runModal.open(obj, options); return false; , iframe: function (obj, callback) , close : function () runModal.close(true); , refresh : function () runModal.refresh() var updateParentHeight = function() window.parent.postMessage($('body').outerHeight(true), '*'); ; $(window).on('load', function() updateParentHeight(); ); $(function() if (isEmbed) $('body').addClass('embed'); $('.desktop').attr('target', '_blank'); updateParentHeight(); //so listing colorboxes are an option if($.colorbox) $('.listing_desc a.colorbox').colorbox(iframe:true,width:'75%',height:'600px'); ); $(function() // Confirm Request to Cancel Tickets $(document).on('click', '#continue_request', function () $('#loading').show(); $('#cancel_reservation_form').submit(); return false; ); // Cancel Request to Cancel Tickets $(document).on('click', '#cancel_request', function () // myModal.close(); if ($.colorbox) $.colorbox.close(); return false; ); if($('#warn_about_clearing').length) // var warn_about_clearing = $('#warn_about_clearing').detach().show(); var warn_about_clearing = $('#warn_about_clearing'); // Cancel Request Btn // $('.cancel_res, #cancel_reservation').click(function(ev) // ev.preventDefault(); // myModal.inline(warn_about_clearing); // return false; // ); if ($.colorbox) $('.cancel_res, #cancel_reservation').colorbox( inline: true, href: '#warn_about_clearing' ); ); Go Back TheComplex header padding-top: 0px; div.flash-zone margin-top: 50px; .customer-care display: block; background: yellow; border-bottom: 1px solid rgba(0,0,0,0.2); text-align: center; padding: 7px 20px; opacity: 0.7; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22px; font-weight: bold; This order is being recorded as being placed by a ShowClix representative .
